Upon Further Review
March 7, 2007
Welcome to the latest edition of “Upon Further Review”... has anyone seen my wallet?
There’s been an outbreak of crazy around the league, here are some examples...
Buffalo allows Nate Clements to walk away and San Fran pays him $10 million a year for it. I really don’t know which team is crazier.
Can someone explain something to me, why would the Seattle Seahawks offer free agent Guard Kris Dielman close to a record sized contract but let Steve Hutchinson leave via free agency last season for about the same or less money? Why not just pay the money last season? I just don’t get it.
I know Jon Gruden loves quarterbacks, but isn’t this getting a little ridiculous?
What’s going on in Dallas and San Diego, especially San Diego? It’s bad enough the Cowboys went ahead and hired Wade Phillips as their new head coach. But for the Chargers to let go a head coach, Marty Schottenheimer, who led them to a 14-2 record and replace him Norv Turner is just mind boggling. That’s like trading a porter house steak for chipped beef. Turner has a career .415 (58-82-1) winning percentage as opposed to Schottenheimer’s .613 (200-126-1). The playoffs? Schottenheimer is 5-13 and Turner is 1-1, so Turner has the better percentage but keep in mind that even Rich Kotite (sorry Eagle fans) holds a 1-1 playoff record, so how good can that be?
While I’m on Dallas, what the heck were they thinking in signing Leonard Davis to a seven-year, $49.6 million contract? This guy has absolutely been a HUGE (and I mean huge) disappointment since coming into the league and now he gets a HUGE contract... it just doesn’t make sense. Size is one thing, skill is another... I’m just not sure Davis has any.
The Jaguars made two curious moves in the signings of Tony Pashos and Dennis Northcutt. Pashos’ signing is curious because the Jaguars already have two starting tackles locked up to long term contracts. But the most curious is the Northcutt signing. They already have three mediocre wide receivers on their roster, why add another?
Finally...
Recently, while speaking at the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, Marvin Lewis was asked by an audience member if he thought his troubled players are capable of straightening out he said, “Steinbach’s (former guard Eric Steinbach, who was charged with operating a boat while drinking last season) in Cleveland now, so that’s their problem”.
Oh man! You are one funny guy Marvin! Ha ha! First off, what an absolutely insensitive thing to say about another human being and your former player. Secondly, now that Steinbach is gone what are you going to do with the other 40 players on your team that have had run-ins with the law? Continue to turn the other cheek? Or just slap them on the wrist and put them in timeout? You’re a joke and the actions of your team are joke!
